Our Plan of Action
We plan to build a centre for wellness and rejuvenation where people can come to find and recreate themselves. Our newly custom designed sustainable complex will serve as a wellness village, providing shelter and sanctuary for victims feeling violence, abuse or personal danger. The centre will have a range of practical solutions ranging from therapy, counselling, wellness courses and other activities to help an individual facing dire circumstances.
There will also be facilities available for hospitality, business functions, events and retreat centre.
Volunteer ethos
Our service motto is to improve ourselves by making a difference to others. All life is interconnected, therefore by helping those in need we ultimately save ourselves.
We believe in promoting a better future for all despite personal challenges and life circumstances. Each of our volunteers have trained and worked together with HL for years and have also survived and overcome extraordinary personal challenge and trauma to shine their light. They now work with the project to help others in our International Village.
From Victim to Survivor
What victims need first above all else is understanding and safety. They need to feel heard and secure. It is undeniable that the worst experience is when you feel all alone with no one to turn to. Not knowing who to trust or to open to. Most victims running from toxic relationships, abusers or fleeing disaster regions often feel vulnerable, most lonely and lost with the weight of the world on their shoulders, afraid for their lives and their children’s safety. It is far worse when victims feel persecuted or interrogated by authorities, family members or colleagues who refuse to believe them.
HuffPost article reported on March 2021 that victims fleeing domestic abuse face unexpected barriers when seeking help. They are left without anyone to turn to. They are almost routinely turned away by so-called “support services” and any government body puts them through a long and painful bureaucracy that fails to do anything helpful and often drives them to suicide. Especially in the pandemic it was common to see mental health and suicide rates soar due to being forced into abusive lockdowns which was their worst nightmare.
There is no point in trying to advice or counsel or coach someone who faces immediate, imminent danger. The first priority must be to help the victim escape. More importantly trauma from abuse lasts much longer and perhaps a lifetime in some cases. The internal effect of trauma must be addressed in order to make a permanent difference to someone’s life. This is where our project seeks to make the biggest difference.
